Description
Buck 184 Buckmaster Survival Bowie Black Pat Pending 1986
The Buck 184 Buckmaster is a large survival bowie knife, allegedly developed at the request of the US Navy SEALs. The knife has a blade that is approximately 7.5 long, and is of the classic Bowie shape. The hollow-ground main edge is about 6.5 long with the false edge being serrated on one side. The spine of the blade features a very aggressive 3 long sawback. The blade is forged from thick stock 425M stainless steel.
The handguard is thick, with both ends curving slightly towards the blade. Each end is drilled and tapped for a 2 long, grappling hook which is designed to allow the knife to be used as an anchor when a line is attached to the lanyard ring at the pommel. The grip is 4 long and 1.25 in diameter, knurled and grooved for a sure grip. The handle is hollow, with a usable internal opening secured by the threaded pommel, which in turn is knurled, slightly larger in diameter than the grip, and sealed with a black rubber O-ring. The threaded pommel also secures a 4.5mm thick steel stamping which is pierced to provide a lanyard/rope hole.
The blade is tang stamped BUCK 184 USA PAT PEND < indicating this knife was made in 1986. Black finish on the whole knife. Includes the original black rigid fiberglass-reinforced plastic sheath that with pouches on the front that are marked Buck (one pouch holds a compass that is included). These are incredibly popular amongst collectors and are hard to find now days. The black models are much harder to find as a lot fewer were made than the bead blasted models. This one is in excellent condition with some wear on the finish from being drawn from the sheath.
